Nikki Taylor [more info]
| Nikki's passion is for the human form and its extraordinary ability to convey the intangible qualities of energy and emotion through tangible flesh. Schooled in classic figure sculpture in clay for casting, which she still uses for bronze portrait commissions, the majority of her work now is in woven wire mesh. Her mesh sculptures range from torsos in relief in various sizes for indoors, to life-size full length figures in the round, designed to live amongst us, indoors or out. Each of Nikki's mesh sculptures is a unique piece, created freehand. She uses mesh in a variety of different metals and finishes. | ||||||||||||||||

Philip Thompson BA [more info]
| Graphic Design was Phil`s chosen career, achieving a HND. During his career in comercial art Phil worked for some very exciting clients such as `Natwest, Midlands, Prudential, Hewlett Packard and RSPCA`. Creative freedom was limited which led Phil to discover his true passion, sculpture. After achieving a BA Hons in sculpture, Phil began to specialize in portraits and abstract sculpture. Phil enjoys the challenge of creating portraits, capturing an individuals character. His portraits are created in clay then cast in bronze. They are detailed and contain a lifelike quality. His portraits include Sarah Keays an ex-member of parliament. Phil`s abstract work compliments his figurative work, giving him another perspective of manipulating form. His subject matter is varied, ranging from capturing human emotion to depicting the natural matrix created by movement and time. Phil has currently completed two public commissions, situated outside the new Stroud College and the entrance of Loughborough Sports Institute. His chosen media for abtract sculpture include bronze, stainless steel and mild steel. Phil has been working part time as a profesional sculptor for a few years. During this time he has undertaken several art related employments. Working at Aardman Animations has sharpened his eye for detail and quickened his creative time to meet deadlines. After three years of employment at Pangolin Foundry Phil has become proficient in the art of casting his work to the final stage of being cast in bronze. He has taught in several schools around the south west of Britain and hopes to build upon this area. | ||||||||||||||||

Gwenda Thompson Marchesi Sculpture BA (Hons) ECA [more info]
| Gwenda draws her inspiration from fairytales, folklore and fables; in particular, the moralistic aspects of these stories, their symbolism, and the animal characters. The animals are life sized in order to encourage the anthrozoological human-animal relationship that has existed universally for thousands of years. Although perhaps cuddly, comic and appealing in their tactility, when the viewer investigates further, one will find a more sinister theme evolves. The animals all share some form of negative emotional portrayal in their posture and expression. Feelings of fear, resentment, exhaustion, sadness, resignation and doubt have all appeared in Gwenda`s works. Interestingly, fairytales have been found to offer reassurance to children on an unconscious level by appealing to the id and the ego. As Bruno Bettelheim discusses in “The Uses of Enchantment; The Meaning and Importance of Fairytales” … They speak about his severe inner pressures in a way that the child unconsciously understands, and – offer examples of both temporary and permanent solutions to pressing difficulties. Along with fairytales, one of the peculiarities of fables that fascinates me is the anthropomorphisation of the animals. Animals are a popular subject matter across the arts, but I have found with my sculptures that the viewer engages even more with something that exudes a subtle human quality. This is a technique used often in fairytales, such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ where the wolf dresses up in granny’s clothing, or where the animals have the power of speech in fables. Rendering the principal characters as animals with human attributes allowed the authors to bring those characteristics, and hence the moral warning they wanted to issue, into greater relief. Mirrors and reflective surfaces have appeared in my work several times. They are commonly interpreted as symbols of self-discovery, self-knowledge, contemplation, and reflection. By showing the room reflected, and creating more space, it also suggests a passage to another world. The mirror is placed strategically so that when the viewer tries to get an impression of the work from the animal’s perspective, he finds himself reflected and therefore becomes a crucial part of the story and ultimately framed into the work itself. | ||||||||||||||||
